How to read a syllabus (and what to pull out of it)

The syllabus is the rulebook for the class. Ten minutes with it in week one saves surprises later. Here's what to pull out.

1. Every date

  • Assignment and paper due dates
  • Exam and quiz dates
  • Reading schedule by week

2. How you're graded

Find the weight of each category — exams, homework, participation. A final worth 40% deserves very different prep than a quiz worth 2%.

3. The policies that bite

  • Late work and extensions
  • Attendance and absences
  • Make-up exams
  • Academic integrity and AI use
  • Regrade requests

4. Who to contact, and when

Write down your professor's and TA's email, office location and office hours. Note how they prefer to be contacted.

5. Notice what it doesn't say

If the syllabus doesn't cover something — say, whether you can drop a quiz — ask early rather than assume.
